Indoor Air Quality ~
                                        Don't Hide It, Eliminate It!

Indoor air quality is a huge issue in today's homes and businesses.  With tighter construction, the use of glues, and chemicals in new construction materials, carpeting, furniture, etc. indoor air pollutants can be 100 times higher indoors than outdoors.

Indoor air pollutants can be the cause of numerous health-related problems.  Indoor air pollutants can cause you to suffer from flu-like symptoms such as headaches, nausea, and respiratory irritation. They can also exacerbate existing illnesses such as allergies and asthma. Recent statistics show more than 40 million people suffer from asthma and allergies.
 
There are three common approaches in reducing indoor air pollution:

Source Control:  Eliminate or control the sources of pollution.
Ventilation:  Dilute or exhaust pollutants through outdoor air ventilation
Air Cleaning: Remove pollutants with thorough proven air cleaning methods.


Source control is the most effective.  This involves minimizing the use of products and materials that cause indoor pollution, employing good hygiene practices to minimize biological contaminants and good housekeeping practices to control particles.

Outdoor Air Ventilation is also effective in adding fresh air to your central heating and air conditioning system to dilute the pollutants and by adding exhaust fans close to the source of contaminants.  In some cases, a good way to ventilate is just simply open you windows, although with allergies to pollen and outdoor pollutants you are better off bringing in filtered fresh air.

Air filtration is a good way to supplement source control and ventilation in improving your indoor air quality.  There are several methods of filtration that are effective in the removal of contaminants in your home or business.

Notes on filtrations:  Filters are only effective when they are in use.  We usually like to inform our customers that a decent pleated filter installed in your system running continuously (fan left in the ON position), is more effective than the most expensive filtration system that only comes on when your heating or air conditioning is on.

A very important component to most filtration systems is the fan or blower motor in your air handler or furnace.  Running a variable speed, DC motor at slower speeds not only reduces the cost of operating a filtering system, but the slower speeds make most filters even more effective.

Ozone is good up high but bad nearby; Ozone generators such as Living Air and Sharper Image Ionizer in our opinion and in the opinion of the Environmental Protection Agency are not the answer. In most cases, raising ozone levels in your home 10 times recommended level might give some people the sense of fresher air but it is not a safe and effective way of removing pollutants. Furthermore, they give you very limited and ineffective particulate control because they just simply do not move enough air.
